Department of Orthopedic Surgery, King Edward Medical University is proudly organizing The 2nd Cadaveric Workshop on Latest Trends in Shoulder Arthroscopy on December 3rd,2024 as a distinguished pre-symposium activity of the 44th KEMU Annual International Scientific Conference. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Sohail Butt, FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic and Upper Limb Surgeon at Dudley NHS Teaching Hospitals, United Kingdom, this hands-on workshop provides orthopedic surgeons and trainees with a unique opportunity to enhance their skills in advanced shoulder arthroscopy. Focused on cutting-edge techniques for treating rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, and shoulder instability, participants will engage in cadaveric dissections to refine their surgical techniques. The workshop will also showcase the latest innovations in surgical instrumentation, visualization, and rehabilitation, equipping attendees with the knowledge to improve patient outcomes in shoulder surgery.

 

 

2nd KEMU Sports Surgery Seminar was organized by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, King Edward Medical University in collaboration with the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Mayo Hospital Lahore.

The event, held under the esteemed patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz, embodied his vision to elevate KEMU towards excellence. The seminar featured expert talks aimed at ‘Prevention of Sports Injuries’ educating professionals on the diagnosis & treatment of musculoskeletal injuries with latest updates.

The Chief Guest of the event was pride of Pakistan Mr. Arshad Mahmood, Olympian & Gold Medalist along with Minister Health Khawaja Salman Rafique.

Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz graced the occasion as the Patron in Chief, with Mr. Khalid Mahmood Secretary General Pakistan Olympic Association, as the Guest of Honor. The event was chaired by Prof. Faisal Masood, and Dr. Asad Abbas Shah as the Course Director.

Among the distinguished faculty and guests were Prof. Muhammad Moin, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Imran Registrar KEMU, Prof. Abrar Ashraf Chairman Dept. of Surgery and Staff President of Sports KEMU, Prof. Zahra Ishrat along with Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband, Dr. Irfan, Dr. Wajahat, Dr. Suhail and Dr. Hashim.

The event also saw the participation of around 450 from King Edward Medical University, Mayo Hospital, Govt. College University, Lahore College University, Riphah University and from various other institutions which included Orthopaedic residents, physiotherapists, and students.

Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor KEMU, shared his personal experiences and journey as a member of the hockey team during his college years. He emphasized the importance of both prevention and treatment of sports injuries. He highlighted the potential for professional sportsmen to benefit from the expertise available at KEMU and Mayo Hospital Lahore. He urged healthcare professionals to educate athletes on the necessity of sound mental health for excelling in today’s highly competitive sports environment. He thanked Mr. Arshad Nadeem for the honor by coming to this historic medical university.

Prof. Faisal Masood delivered an insightful talk on the role of Orthopaedics in diagnosing and treating sports injuries and interacted with the participants.

Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband gave a talk and discussed the various Orthopedic procedures for Sports injuries through arthroscopic surgery. The services of the department and the applicability of these techniques in the context of sports.

Dr. Asad Abbas Shah, head of the Dept. of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mayo Hospital and a renowned Sports Physician, provided an engaging overview of the history and significance of Sports Medicine. He shared his experiences representing the country at various national & international events. He delivered a detailed talks and addressed participants’ questions and queries on the topic.

Mr. Arshad Nadeem, the pride of Pakistan, Olympic Gold medalist in javelin shared his experiences to his journey to the fame. He shared with the participants the assistance he received from doctors on various occasions during injuries. He gave credit to his parents and teachers for winning the Olympics.

The Chief Guest, Khawaja Salman Rafique Minister Health expressed his gratitude to the organizers and attendees for their respect and recognition for this important event. He praised the KEMU for starting the Sports Medicine Fellowship program and recognized the efforts of Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz in this regard. He emphasized the importance of Sports for the youth and vowed to start the same program in other teaching hospitals.

Prof. Faisal Masood extended his heartfelt thanks to the distinguished guests and participants for their valuable time. He gave special mention to the Facilitators Dr. Asad, Dr. Attique, and Course Coordinators Dr. Mazhar Rafique and Dr. Suhail Niazi for their hard work and dedication.

The event concluded with the Chief Guest distributing shields among the participants, followed by a tour of Patiala block, lunch, and group photographs to commemorate the occasion.

The Fortnightly Meeting of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Lahore took place at the *Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery Unit-II* Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. It was hosted by *Prof. Javed Hassan Raza Khan.*

The event was well-attended by prominent orthopaedic surgeons from across Lahore, alongside postgraduate trainees and specialty fellows. During the meeting, many intriguing cases were presented, which attracted significant interest and led to a lively question-and-answer session following each presentation.
