Broadening the horizon and continuing with an inclusive approach, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, King Edward Medical University organized a ‘Sports Medicine Seminar’ in collaboration with the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Mayo Hospital Lahore.
The event, held under the esteemed patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayyaz, embodied his vision to elevate KEMU towards excellence. The seminar featured expert talks aimed at educating professionals on the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in the context of Orthopaedics along with emphasizing the importance and latest updates on anti-doping and sports nutrition.
Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz graced the occasion as the Patron in Chief, with Prof. Dr. Ahsan Nauman, CEO of Mayo Hospital, as the Guest of Honor. The event was chaired by Prof. Faisal Masood, with Prof. Muhammad Iqbal serving as Co-Chairman and Dr. Asad Abbas Shah as the Course Director.
The Chief Guest of the event was Dato’ Tayyab Ikram, President of the International Hockey Federation and Member of the International Olympic Committee.
Among the distinguished faculty and guests were Prof. Abrar Ashraf, Chairman of the Dept. of Surgery and Staff President of Sports KEMU, along with Dr. Mumraiz Naqshband, Dr. Irfan, Dr. Wajahat, and Dr. Hashim.
The event also saw the participation of hockey Olympians Mr. Anjum Saeed and Mr. Sohail Ashraf, as well as national champions in javelin and wrestling, Mr. Arshad Nadeem and Mr. Inam Butt. Orthopaedic residents, physiotherapists, and students were also in attendance.
Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, Vice Chancellor KEMU, shared his personal experiences and journey as a member of the hockey team during his college years. He emphasized the importance of both prevention and treatment of sports injuries and informed the participants of KEMU’s vision to establish a center of excellence in Sports Medicine. He highlighted the potential for national sports federations to benefit from the expertise available at KEMU and Mayo Hospital Lahore. Vice Chancellor further reaffirmed his unwavering support for initiatives like these, underscoring their significance at the national level and beyond.
Prof. Ahsan Nauman, CEO of Mayo Hospital, emphasized the critical importance of maintaining alertness and prioritizing mental health. He urged healthcare professionals to educate athletes on the necessity of sound mental health for excelling in today’s highly competitive sports environment. He also recommended implementing strategies to help athletes manage stress effectively.
Prof. Faisal Masood delivered an insightful talk on the role of Orthopaedics in treating sports injuries and interacted with the participants. He highlighted the comprehensive treatment options available at Mayo Hospital, which include a team of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sports Physicians, and Physiotherapists. He also discussed the regular procedures through arthroscopic surgery by the department and the applicability of these techniques in the context of sports.
Dr. Asad Abbas Shah, head of the Dept. of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mayo Hospital and a renowned Sports Physician, provided an engaging overview of the history and significance of Sports Medicine. He shared his experiences representing the country at various national & international events. He delivered a detailed talk and addressed participants’ questions and queries regarding anti-doping and nutrition.
Mr. Arshad Nadeem, a national javelin player holding international records and gold medals, briefly shared his experiences and the assistance he received from doctors on various occasions during injuries.
Mr. Inam Butt, a national wrestler and gold medalist, also interacted with the audience, sharing his sporting experiences.
The Chief Guest, Dato’ Tayyab Ikram, President of the International Hockey Federation, shared his life experiences and journey through various sporting events, culminating in his prestigious position. He emphasized the importance of analytical approach and employing professionalism in the respective fields. He expressed his gratitude to the organizers and attendees for their respect and recognition.
Prof. Faisal Masood extended his heartfelt thanks to the distinguished guests and participants for their valuable time. He gave special mention to the facilitators Dr. Aqeel Qureshi, Dr. Asad Ali, and Course Coordinators Dr. Mazhar Rafique and Dr. Suhail Niazi for their hard work and dedication.
The event concluded with the Chief Guest distributing shields among the participants, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
